Harlingen Family Dentistry Hosted the Harlingen Chamber of Commerce Youth Leadership Class, 2018, with students from Harlingen High School, Harlingen School for the Medical Professions and Harlingen High School South, and IDEA of San Benito.

In total there were twenty-one students excited to learn about Harlingen Family Dentistry and the various dental specialties as well as general dentistry the organization provides to the community.

The students toured all departments at Harlingen Family Dentistry. They received a presentation from Dr. Glenn Thomason who presented information as to the education needed for the various dental specialties and general dentistry.  Cheryl Dosal, Human Resources Director, told the students what she looks for in an applicant and what is expected of the applicant once employed.

TJ Gonzalez and Meli Vizcaino demonstrated how Harlingen Family Dentistry utilizes state-of-the-art digital lab technology.

Harlingen Family Dentistry is focused on educating their patients as well as the community-at-large as to the importance of their oral health and how it relates to their overall health and well-being as well as providing up-to-date affordable quality dental care.

Hat’s off to the Harlingen Chamber of Commerce and Alexis Alaniz, Executive Assistant, for this worthwhile program.

Texas Parents’ Day is designated throughout the month of August each year.

Texas Parents’ Day was created by the Texas Legislature in 1999 to celebrate the Texas families and emphasize “the importance of patents taking an active role in the raising and future of their children”.

Harlingen Family Dentistry presented oral health tips and information for parents to help their children maintain good oral health.   Poor oral health has a detrimental effect on students ‘performance in school and their success later in life.

Rio Grande Valley Dental Assistant Training School Holds Spring Graduation 2018

The DATS Fall Class of 2018 celebrated with their friends and families, Tuesday, May 15, 2018, as they received their certificates to be Certified Dental Assistants in the state of Texas.   The event was held at Harlingen Family Dentistry. Cheryl Dosal, program coordinator, welcomed the graduates and guests and introduced Dr. Juan D. Villarreal, CEO and Founder of Harlingen Family Dentistry.  Dr. Villarreal stated that Dentistry is constantly evolving with new technology and dental providers are constantly learning in order to provide the most-up-to date dental care for their patients.  He emphasized that no matter where you are born and raised, you can accomplish anything you can envision with hard work and persistence.

The Keynote speaker, Dr. Glenn Thomason, spoke to the graduates about what to base their lives on: something to believe in, someone to love, something to hope for and something to do with passion.  He also stressed three important elements for a happy and fulfilled life: Trust, Commitment and Love.  Dr. Thomason commended the group and encouraged them to become familiar with the various specialties within Dentistry and to move forward with their dental assisting careers.

Refreshments were served and enjoyed by all.

Harlingen Family Dentistry has expanded to Raymondville, Brownsville, Edinburg and McAllen, Weslaco and Austin due to Dr. Villarreal’s continued passion to provide affordable quality dental care to the Rio Grande Valley communities and Austin.

Students were acknowledged and awarded for their community projects that incorporated The Way to Happiness precepts and JROTC Core Values.
Schools from across the Rio Grande Valley participated in the contest.
In the competition, members of local high school JROTC programs present activities they have personally done to implement precepts contained in “The Way to Happiness” book and the JROTC Core Values. The common goal is to help make the world a better place.

Willy, Harlingen Family Dentistry’s mascot, loved visiting the children at Travis Elementary School in Harlingen, Texas, Tuesday, February 13, 2018.

Since this is National Children’s Dental Health Month Willy is really busy talking to lots of boys and girls about their dental health. Willy was very pleased with the lovely manners and how well the children listened to the lessons as to the role our dental health plays in our overall health.

Celebrating National Children’s Dental Health Month

Bonham Elementary School Nurse Becky Dominguez Welcomes Willy the Walrus

K and 2nd graders at Bonham had great time learning about the importance of keeping their teeth clean and healthy. Discussion about teeth and how they connect to the entire body, the role of sugar and plaque were explained. The Harlingen Family Dentistry team presented the various foods that we should eat and the foods we should not eat and how those foods directly affect our oral health and in turn our total health were demonstrated with a video and skit with roles played by the children.

It was wonderful meeting all the children at Bonham, and a hat’s off to their principal, Nurse Becky and their teachers for inspiring such good behavior in the children.

Red Nose Day May, 25th 2017

Harlingen Family Dentistry Pediatric Department supports Red Nose Day. Today is the third annual Red Nose Day, a charitable effort seeking to end child poverty by raising money and awareness for kids in the U.S. and around the world.
Organized run by the nonprofit Comic Relief Inc and created by award-winning writer-director Richard Curtis (Love Actually), Red Nose Day has collected over $1 billion for impoverished children in its 30-year history. Since launching in the U.S. in 2015, the effort has helped millions of children and young people in all 50 states, as well as 25 countries.

Harlingen Family Dentistry hosted its 10th annual values-based Scholarship Competition. Students were acknowledged and awarded for their community projects that incorporated The Way to Happiness precepts and JROTC Core Values.

Students are required to present a portfolio summation of results achieved in their implementing of “the Way to Happiness” precepts and the JROTC core Values. In addition, each student presents an oral and visual presentation to the judges with project documentation.

Schools from across the Rio Grande Valley participated in the contest. The three winners will share $6,000 in scholarships when they register in an institution of higher learning of their choice. Follow-up Award winners include:

The 2017 First Place Winner, $3,000.00 scholarship award: Ezelina Lopez, Harlingen High School, MSG Tony Gonzales, Instructor. Ezelina’s project was focused on child abuse. Statistics were given and the story of how Maggie’s House came to be. Ezelina organized her Harlingen High School JROTC cadets beautiful Maggie’s House to make it more presentable for abused victims.

The Second Place Winner, $2,000.00 scholarship award: David Garate, Rio Hondo High School, LTC Clifford Moriarty, Instructor, selected as his project the Rio Hondo blood Drive. It was the first time in five years a successful blood drive had been conducted. Around 84 pints of blood was collected which has the potential to save over 240 human beings. He applied the Air force JROTC Core Values of Integrity First, Service Before Self and Excellence in all That We Do. The Way to Happiness Daniel applied are Take Care of yourself, Fulfill Your Obligations and Set a Good Example.

Third Place winner, Daniel de la Cruz, Porter High School, SFC Marvin Williams, Daniel de la Cruz won the $1,000.00 third place award for his Can Food Drive involving the Porter High School students and the JROTC students. They collected more than 200 food cans and water packs for those in need in the community.

David Garate Presented the Harlingen Family Dentistry JROTC Way to Happiness Scholarship Award

Friday May 19, 2017, Gail Thomason, community Outreach Director for Harlingen Family Dentistry presented David Garate the 2nd place scholarship award of $2,000.00, for the University of his Choice at the Rio Hondo Air Force JROTC Awards ceremony.
David was commended for the blood drive he spearheaded. David and his team had 84 pints of blood donated on campus that has the potential of David over 240 lives

Students at Bonham Elementary School learned the value of dentistry to total overall health, Thursday, May 18, 2017.  Each area of dentistry was explained including the dental specialties and the amount of education it takes to achieve those specialties.

The students came on rotating cycles and eventually we spoke to all the grades.  The students were very well behaved and exhibited great manners.  We heard a lot of “thank you’s”.  Hat’s off to the teachers and staff at Bonham Elementary for coordinating this great event for the children.

Family and friends joined the DATS graduates at their commencement ceremony held at Harlingen Family Dentistry, May 11, 2017. Cheryl Dosal, DATS Coordinator, welcomed the graduates and guests. Dr. Vivian Teegardin and Dr. Juan D. Villarreal, instructors, acknowledged the graduates for their competition of the program. Dr. Juan D. Villarreal gave an overview of the recent advances in dentistry. “We are living in an exciting time for dentistry”, Dr. Villarreal commented.
Dr. Glenn Thomason delivered the commencement address. He told the graduates to get a dream, as well as the goals needed to achieve that dream. “A dream without a plan is just a wish; a dream with a plan can change the world”
A reception was held following the presentation of certificates.

JROTC Students Present Program at Harlingen Rotary Club

Friday, May 12, 2017, David Garate, Rio Hondo High School Air Force JROTC and Ezelina Lopez, Harlingen High School Army JROTC presented their winning projects. David placed 2nd and Ezelina placed 1st in the 10th Rio Grande Area High Schools Way to Happiness JROTC Scholarship competition sponsored by Dr. Juan D. Villarreal, Harlingen Family Dentistry.
David planned and directed a blood drive at Rio Hondo high School. David and his team collected 84 pints of blood that could save over 240 lives. They more than doubled their original targets.
Ezelina ‘s project was to beautiful Maggie’s House located in San Benito where abused mothers and children can go for counseling and help. Dr. Katherine Dittman and husband Mark lost their two year old daughter, Maggie, to abuse by the baby sitter and Maggies’s House was created. Ezelina’s team painted, cleaned, mulched and planted the yard giving Maggie’s House a fresh look.

Harlingen Family Dentistry provided oral health information and answered questions from the parents.  The children were presented toothbrushes and dental related coloring activity books. We wanted to impress upon the parents that a child needs to be in school to learn.  According to the US Surgeon General,   51 million school hours are lost yearly due to dental-related illness.

Friday, May 12, 2017, the Harlingen High School JROTC held its annual award program. It was absolutely great seeing all those students uniformed and polished along with perfect behavior receiving their awards.
Gail Thomason, Harlingen Family Dentistry, presented the Way to Happiness JROTC first place award to Ezelina Lopez for $3,000.00 for her child abuse program, Maggie’s House. Miranda Cruz was selected to receive the dental assisting school scholarship for a value of $2,476.00 from Harlingen Family Dentistry for her work in applying the Way to Happiness precepts along with the JROTC core values throughout her education years.
Congratulations to all including head instructor, MSG Tony Gonzales for a job very well done.
